Money could be better spent
It is with much regret that I read of the proposed sculptures for Patterson and Forsyth streets, the cost for such works is outrageous at an estimated $564,000 and this does not include the cost and building of foundations.

Photographing nature: Flock designs
At first glance it looks like an abstract painting – thousands of flecks of white made by delicate brush strokes on a grey canvas. But look closer, and what you're actually seeing is a photograph of many thousands of birds.

Digital beasts: six great D-SLRs and superzooms
Nature doesn't always behave itself. Where a human subject may be amenable to waiting and smiling for the camera, animals have their own agendas. So, while many cameras have advanced features, not all of them are helpful for nature photography. Face detection systems – where the camera recognises faces and focuses on them automatically – are mostly redundant, as with very few exceptions they ...

Design: Wooden it be nice?
On a handmade shelf, in a former dairy cottage in the west of England, sits a slim tome called Briefing your Architect. It's a little bit dusty these days, however, as its owner Niall Hobhouse has got pretty good at briefing architects himself. In fact, the art dealer and property developer, who lives on a 1,000-acre estate in Somerset, has got so slick at it that his recent conversion of an ...

David Lister: The Week in Arts
Congratulations to that excellent conductor Sir Mark Elder. The congratulations are not just for his recent knighthood, though that is, of course, well deserved. What left an even more lasting impression on me was a short interview he gave this week in The Independent about a concert he was conducting for the City of London Festival at St Paul's Cathedral.
