The Hollister Symphony Group has one more trip for the season. The next Thursday matinee performance is April 26 - it's Mussorgsky/Pictures at an Exhibition. The bus leaves Dunne Park at 8:30 a.m. for San Francisco and returns at 6:30 p.m.

ENCINITAS – House Alive founder Coenraad Rogmans guarantees that when he starts building a structure with cob, passers-by will get involved. “It's something I can't explain,” Rogmans said. “I can go downtown with a pile of mud, take my shoes and socks off, start sculpting walls and within 20 minutes, I'll have a crowd.”

Tokyo Int'l Anime Fair Starts Image Mascot Art Contest
The Tokyo International Anime Fair will launch a contest for the image of its mascot character next year. The fair will accept entries from May 1 to June 30, and the winner will receive 200,000 yen (about US$2,000). The fair's website posted the images of the previous years' characters.

Judi Gilden of Marlboro will provide a slide presentation and a discussion of her paintings at a meeting Tuesday of exhibiting artist members of the National Arts Club in New York City. Gilden, one of the members, also belongs to Pen and Brush in the city and is a signature member of the North East Watercolor Society and teaches watercolor painting to adult students at Artisan Studio in Marlboro.

'Big Bugs' invade for arboretum exhibit
Spring is finally here, and the bugs are out - and bigger than ever. On April 25, The Morton Arboretum in Lisle will premiere sculptor David Rogers' "Big Bugs" exhibit. The huge bugs - as big as 25 feet long - are designed to inspire children to learn more about what lives in the backyard. Rogers' giant creations are made from trees, dried branches, tree roots and green saplings.

Although she showed early aptitude for art, Kari Jurgens, 29, of New Lenox, shied away from it until she took a Joliet Junior College pottery course. That class gave Jurgens the confidence to branch out into other media, earn a bachelor's degree in studio art at Lewis University in Romeoville, and pursue art as a full-time career.
