Sculpting the Gourd
I have carved pumpkins since I was a child. As kids, my sister and I carved the typical triangles and jagged mouth for a traditional jack-o’-lantern. A few years in a row, we painted the outside of the pumpkin instead of carving it, in hopes of preserving the fruit a bit longer.

Governor's arts awards include three in Richmond
The Richmond Ballet and its artistic director, the Richmond Jazz Society and Theater IV and its founders are among the 2008 Governor's Awards for the Arts winners, announced this afternoon. Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced the 10 winners, who were selected from 345 nominations. They will be honored Sept. 17 at a ceremony at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
