Preservationists: Gas drilling threatens carvings
Along Utah's Nine Mile Canyon lies what some call the longest art gallery in the world — thousands of prehistoric rock carvings and paintings of bighorn sheep and other wildlife, hunters wielding spears, and warriors engaged in hand-to-hand combat. But now, a dramatic increase in natural gas drilling is proposed on the plateau above the canyon, and preservationists fear trucks will kick up dust ...

Two visions, one love
Though their interpretation differs, two local artists share the same love of painting. Their work is on display at the Hillsdale Golf and Country Club. The teacher and student, Adabelle Hill and Loretta Beaverson, respectively, are the May artists chosen to share their paintings inside the club’s setting on the shores of Baw Beese Lake.

Cannes: sobriety and great excess
The Grim and the Glamorous. It sounds like some lost 1950s melodrama by actress Judy Garland's director-husband Vincente Minnelli, but it's actually how many would describe the 2008 Cannes Film Festival. In my 20 years of going to Cannes, rarely has the disparity between what was on screen and what was transpiring at the festival — publicity stunts, chic soirees, yacht parties — been so marked. ...

A winner like no other
Every year, Cannes pundits attempt to read the tea leaves on the top prizes by looking not at the films but at the jury: Are its members serious, political, airheads, in any way beholden to producers or agents with a work in competition? This year's jury head, unorthodox and left-leaning American actor Sean Penn, announced the socially conscious nature of his criteria at the festival's outset ...

Permanent collection not pulling crowds
As seen in last month's "Inside Art," international rankings of art exhibition attendances present the achievements of Japanese museums in the best possible light. Look at annual attendance figures, however, and the picture is very different. Consider the case of Tokyo National Museum in Ueno. According to an annual ranking of exhibition attendances published by The Art Newspaper in Britain, ...

The last splash of spring
Tokyo's myriad gallery scene usually slows down a bit in the summer, so May has seen a whack of openings across the city. At Nichido Contemporary Art ( www.nca-g.com ) in Chuo Ward's Hatchobori, critic and writer Kentaro Ichihara has curated a show loosely based on identity. Regardless of the vague explanations of the theme in the press release, mostly it's a reason to bring together an ...
